clive james

Watched a Colbert interview with Clive James, author of 'Cultural Amnesia'. Colbert tried to make fun of intellectuals and Clive James fought back admirably. However, there is a slight smugness about Clive's attitude that is discomforting and Stephen brings it out by referring to intellectuals as 'elitists'. I decided to check out Clive's intellectual rantings (clivejames.com). Some of his observations are interesting. "Most men spend a good part of their lives learning that other people are alive too..." from 'On Nicole Kidman'. I couldn't have said it better except for replacing 'men' with 'people'. While it is easy to laugh at intellectuals for the extremes to which they take the power of thought and logical reasoning, it is hard to refute human mind altogether.
